Service Tech Select is an editorially independent publication about the software and technology that service businesses run on. It is not owned by a software vendor, a private equity group or a marketing agency. Vendors do not control coverage, conclusions or rankings, and no vendor has editorial control or prepublication approval. Commercial relationships are disclosed separately.
Most software buying advice tells you what a product claims to do. We want to show what the evidence supports.
Why it exists
The software market for field service businesses is crowded and confusing, and the buyers are usually owner-operators: the same person who runs the jobs, answers the phone and signs up for the software. They do not have an IT department to run a procurement process. They pick something, migrate their customer list, and find out six weeks later what it cannot do.
Much of the software advice we reviewed relied heavily on vendor feature lists and did not make verification dates or evidence types clear. We think that is a solvable problem, and that solving it takes work rather than opinions: build the accounts, run comparable workflows through products where access and product design allow a meaningful comparison, write down exactly what happened, and keep it current.
What we cover
Software and technology for service businesses: field service management, customer records, estimating, scheduling and dispatch, invoicing and payments, recurring service, inspection and photo documentation, and the integrations between them. Coverage starts with the trades whose workflows we have mapped, listed by trade here. A trade is added only after its workflow has been mapped and reviewed. The site is written for businesses in the United States and Canada; where a point depends on climate, terminology, currency or local practice, the page says so.
Who is responsible
Service Tech Select was founded and is run by Evan Mercer, Founder & Lead Researcher. He defines the evaluation framework, creates and authorizes the test accounts, runs the hands-on sessions attributed to him, checks material claims against the cited evidence, and approves every subjective assessment and recommendation before it is published. Editorial pages identify the person responsible for their research and approval.
There is no editorial team behind the name and we do not pretend there is: one accountable person, a documented process, and evidence you can check.
How research works
We test comparable service-business workflows using authorized accounts and synthetic data. A person runs the product interactions; software, including AI, may assist with organizing evidence, calculations, drafting and quality checks, and is never presented as a person’s experience of the product. Product facts, hands-on findings, third-party reports and editorial judgments are labelled separately, and a page says plainly when something has not been tested. The full rules are in our methodology.
Independence and corrections
Service Tech Select does not currently use affiliate links. If that changes, a link that can earn us a commission will be labelled where it appears, and commission will never determine our rankings.
Our affiliate disclosure lists current relationships and explains how a commercial link is labelled; our editorial policy sets out what we publish, how evidence is labelled and how corrections work.
We get things wrong, and software changes weekly. If something here is out of date or incorrect, tell us. A correction is verified against the source and the affected fact’s verification date moves to the day it was rechecked; the page’s updated date changes with the page. Unrelated facts do not receive a new date unless they were rechecked too.
